Sold out, no venues: India's live-events boom meets the ground

Tickets vanish in hours, but India still lacks purpose-built venues. What FICCI FRAMES 2026 heard, what it means on show day, and the shows coming up.

India's live-events business has a nice problem and a hard one. The nice problem: people are buying tickets faster than organisers can find places to put them. The hard one: the places mostly don't exist yet, so every big show still gets built from scratch on a racecourse, an exhibition ground or a mall's open-air arena.

That was the mood at FICCI FRAMES 2026 in Mumbai, where the live-events panel was titled, fittingly, "Sold Out, Scaling Up". Here's what stood out, and what it means for the people who actually run the ground.

What the industry said

  • Demand has overtaken supply. Kunal Khambhati, who chairs FICCI's live events forum and runs events at District by Zomato, said his team's Samay Raina tour had sold about 1.5 lakh tickets and was heading towards 2 lakh. Lining up venues for what should be a simple auditorium tour took four months.
  • The venue gap runs from small to huge. The panel's biggest complaint was the lack of purpose-built venues at every size, from 3,000-seat halls to 40,000-seat stadiums. Sabbas Joseph of Wizcraft put it bluntly: the venue infrastructure isn't there.
  • Government is moving on permissions. Prithul Kumar, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, said a single-window portal for live-event permissions is now running. A model executive order has gone to the states, and five, including Maharashtra, have adopted it. States are also being asked to commit to clearing permissions within 15 days.
  • Paperwork for foreign acts is getting lighter. According to the same session, the RBI no longer requires a bank guarantee for advance payments to foreign artists, and the Home Ministry is easing re-registration for touring artists and crew. There's still no dedicated visa for professionals travelling with instruments.
  • States want concerts. Assam's tourism chief described a concert-tourism policy with gap funding and a state venue offered free of cost. He said the Guns N' Roses Guwahati show on 17 November was close to selling out within a day.
  • Margins are thin. Saregama's Siddharth Anand Kumar called event margins wafer-thin, with promoters carrying most of the risk. A return of local entertainment tax is the industry's biggest worry.

Separately, an industry estimate reported by Whalesbook on 1 November put the Indian live-events market at about ₹14,500 crore in 2025, growing to roughly ₹19,600 crore by 2028. The report also notes comedy tours spreading into tier-2 and tier-3 cities like Surat, Vadodara and Nagpur. (The article doesn't name the underlying study, so treat the numbers as directional.)

What it means on show day

We spend our nights inside these temporary venues, so here's the ops view:

  1. No venue means more build. A racecourse has no turnstiles, no permanent F&B and no signage. Every gate, queue lane, counter and washroom block has to be planned, built, staffed and taken down again. Headcount on these shows is driven by the site plan, not just the ticket count.
  2. Crowd flow is the product. When 40,000 people use a ground that was a parking lot last week, the walk from the gate to the stage is the experience. Supervisors at choke points and floaters who can move matter more than an extra five people at the barricade.
  3. Tier-2 tours need local crew. As comedy and music tours reach more cities, flying a full team in for every show stops working. Verified local crew who know the city, the language and the venue roads are the difference between a smooth night and a long one.
  4. Faster permissions still need early plans. A 15-day permission window helps, but crew briefings, rosters and transport home after a 1 AM finish still have to be locked in before tickets go on sale.
