November is when Delhi NCR's event calendar goes from busy to impossible. Weddings, corporate parties, farmhouse sangeets and the odd stadium show, sometimes all on the same Saturday. If you've worked a shift here this month, you'll know all of these.
1. You leave home in a T-shirt and come back wishing you had a jacket
Reporting time is 4 PM and it's pleasant. Pack-up is 1 AM and the farmhouse lawn has turned into a fridge. Every experienced crew member carries a layer in their bag. Everyone else learns once.
2. "Farmhouse, Chhattarpur" is not an address
There are many farmhouses. They all have the same gate. Your location pin, shared by a cousin of the bride, points to a field. Call the supervisor before you call the cab.
3. The baraat runs on its own clock
It was supposed to arrive at 8:30. At 9:15 you can hear the band. At 9:40 you can see the band. At 10:10 the band is still dancing at the gate, and so, honestly, are some of us.
4. The dhol player has more stamina than everyone on the crew combined
We've been standing since 4. He's been playing since 4. He's still smiling. Respect.
5. The heater is the most popular guest
Put a patio heater next to the welcome desk and you'll have a crowd around it in minutes. The welcome desk becomes the warming station. Plan your lanes accordingly.
6. You will be asked, "Bhaiya, gol gappe kahan hain?" at least 30 times
And at least once, by someone standing next to the gol gappe counter.
7. Masks in the bag, next to the power bank
Some November evenings the air makes itself felt. Crew who work back-to-back shifts this month keep a mask in the bag. It sits next to the power bank, the safety pins and the spare black socks.
8. Three weddings, one road
Two wedding processions and a corporate party on the same stretch, all trying to turn at the same point. Somebody's car is parked in front of all three gates. Parking crew in NCR deserve medals.
9. The dinner counter queue at 11:30 PM is the busiest place in the city
Everyone waited for the varmala. Now 600 people want dinner in the same 15 minutes. If you're on F&B support, this is your moment.
10. Every crew member has a "best November" story
The family that sent dessert to the crew room. The bride's grandmother who asked everyone's name. The supervisor who sorted cabs home for the whole team at 2 AM. That's why people come back to this work every season.
