Working events in Bengaluru: 9 things every crew member knows

The 2-hour commute to a 20-km venue, the drizzle nobody forecast and the show that ends exactly on time. Working shows in Bengaluru, from the crew.

Bengaluru does events its own way: big concerts on grounds at the edge of town, tech conferences that want everyone badged by 9 AM, and weekend gigs that end bang on time. If you've worked a shift here, you'll recognise every one of these.

1. Reporting time is 3 PM. You leave at 12:30

The venue is 20 km away. Google Maps says 50 minutes. Google Maps is an optimist. Experienced crew leave early, eat on the way and arrive with time for chai.

2. "It won't rain today"

It will. A light drizzle at 5 PM, just as the barricades go up. Every Bengaluru crew bag has a poncho, a plastic cover for the phone and a cloth for the scanner screen.

3. The show ends on time. Exactly on time

When the sound goes off, it goes off. The crowd turns to the exits in one move, and the exit plan becomes the main event. Gate crew know: the last song is your cue, not the end of your shift.

4. Every event is "just off the Outer Ring Road"

They're all just off the Outer Ring Road. Some are off the end of it. Pin drops are shared, re-shared and still lead to the back gate of a different venue.

5. You badge 2,000 people before breakfast

Conference season means registration desks open at 7:30 AM, laptops on, lanyards sorted A to Z. By 9:15, you know more surnames than a wedding caterer.

6. Somebody asks where the "filter coffee counter" is

There may not be one. They will ask anyway. If there is one, its queue is longer than the merch line.

7. You switch languages three times in one sentence

Kannada for the security team, Hindi for the bar back, English for the artist manager. "Sir, ondu nimisha, bas two minutes, we're checking." Everyone understands.

8. The cab home has its own surge pricing story

Ten thousand people leave a ground at once and all open the same apps. Crew who've done this before plan the ride home with the team, or wait it out with a plate of something hot.

9. It's worth it

The roar when the headliner walks out. The supervisor who sorts dinner for the whole crew. The guest who comes back to say thanks. That's why the same faces show up season after season.
