The 9 people you meet at every Indian event (a crew field guide)

Ask anyone who's worked a gate, a registration desk or a buffet line. These nine characters show up at every Indian event, from a society Diwali mela to a stadium night.

Anyone who's worked a gate, a registration desk or a buffet line knows these people. They show up at every event in India, from a society Diwali mela to a 50,000-person stadium night. Here's the field guide, written with love by people who stand for ten hours at a time.

1. The "my name should be on the list" guest

It isn't. It never is. But they know Sharma ji, who knows the organiser's cousin, and they'll be on the phone with him in a second. Crew survival tip: smile, step aside, call your supervisor. Never argue at the gate.

2. The washroom question, asked at the washroom door

"Bhaiya, washroom kahan hai?" Asked, without fail, to the usher standing directly in front of the washroom sign. Point gently. Everyone has walked past an obvious sign at some point in their life.

3. The 7 o'clock guest who arrives at 7

The bravest person at the event. They're alone in a hall with 400 empty chairs and a sound engineer saying "check, check" into the mic. Look after them. They're the only one who read the invite properly.

4. "Check, check, one-two"

The sound check that started at 4 PM and is still going at 6:45. We don't know what they're checking any more. We suspect they don't either.

5. The extra goodie-bag negotiator

"One more, for my daughter. She couldn't come." The daughter, it turns out, has three sisters. This is where good crew learn diplomacy: count the stock, follow the client's rule, and say no nicely.

6. The client who wants it "simple"

"Keep it very simple." Two weeks later: a 30-foot LED wall, a cold-pyro entry, a live band and a horse. We love this client. The horse needs ushers too.

7. The wristband engineer

Somehow they've moved a VIP wristband from one wrist to another, to a friend, and back again. Respect for the craft. Still no entry to the VIP lounge.

8. The power bank borrower

"Bas 5 minute charge kar lo." It's your power bank. It's now theirs. Carry a spare (tip from every crew member, ever).

9. The person who makes the whole thing work

The crew member who's been on their feet since 2 PM, has answered "where's the washroom" 214 times, and still greets the last guest at midnight with a real smile. Nobody posts about them, but every good event runs on them.
